I went and read about the litter box issue. It didn't really say a lot besides checking medical issues first then about changing back to the old food and adding another cat box and going to boxes without lids. Have you tried just a big rubbermaid container for a cat box and just using Tidy Cat NON clumping? I know my cats hate small litter boxes and I have 2 boxes per cat. I notice my cats like to poop in certain boxes and pee in the others.
This is what I use for cat boxes. It pretty much equals up to two cats boxes. I have 7 of them. 6 in the cat room and one in my bedroom. I just throw the lid away or don't take it when I buy the container.

Thanks. I think the problem is he just likes his box to be really, really clean. So I'm trying to do a much better job.

Hey. I am going to search your blog for the post about the kitty litter problems. I'm hoping I can help. I have 14 indoor cats with no problems. I'm pretty good at the litter issues. Please say what is going on again

Oh no!!! I house sat a cat that was having litter box issues and they just put paper around the boxes for him to poo on. Eddie, the cat, ended up having stomach cancer and had to be put down. That was difficult especially since I was the one who noticed that he couldn't keep anything down, and was puking up pink stuff with it.
And no I do not mean to alarm you. I am sure that the litter box issues are something different but since you haven't changed anything in the house or routines I am not sure why Scout is doing this! Good luck in your endevours!!
